Renovation
work is ongoing at the Historic Fort Coombs Armory in Apalachicola.
A
construction company called Birkshire Johnstone out of Pensacola is doing over 850 thousand dollars in
renovations to the building which includes installing a central heating,
ventilation and air conditioning system.
The
work also includes adding a new warming kitchen and handicapped accessible
restrooms.
The company is also repairing the windows on
the 4th street wall.
People
driving by will notice that the windows on the front of the building have been
removed and the opening boarded up.
The
windows have been sent to the window subcontractor’s shop for repair.
In the rear of the building the windows on the
second floor have been removed to allow the installation of the vents for the
air conditioning equipment, which will be installed in the old shooting range
at the rear of the building.
Demolition
is underway on the interior of the Armory to clear the space for the new
kitchen and restrooms.
The
funds to pay for the work were provided by the Franklin County Tourist
Development Council and the State of Florida Division of Historic Resources.
Construction
should be completed by the end of the year.
Once
the work is complete, the county plans to use the armory as a convention center as well as a
destination for private events like weddings.
