WCSO PURSUIT RESULTS IN ARREST OF TALLAHASSEE FUGITIVE

Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office deputies, working in cooperation with the Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Wakulla Correctional Institution (WCI) K-9 Unit, arrested a Tallahassee fugitive who was wanted for more than 36 felony fraud warrants in Leon County and 60 to 70 additional felony charges from agencies in Tallahassee, Franklin County, Gadsden County, Wakulla County and Thomas County, Ga., according to Sheriff Charlie Creel.

Tallahassee Police Department investigators contacted the WCSO several days ago in an effort to alert deputies that Evelyn Karrey Hart, 49, of 24177 Lanier Street, Tallahassee, might be in Wakulla County.

Deputies had been on the lookout for the fugitive who was wanted for the theft of checks and the forging of checks collected during area burglaries.

At 11:10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, Detective Richard Moon and Detective Clint Beam spotted the suspect vehicle on U.S. Highway 98 in Medart. Detective Moon made contact with Hart at an automotive business on the highway but when he approached the vehicle, Hart jumped back inside and drove off nearly striking Detective Moon with her vehicle.

Detective Clint Beam joined the pursuit which proceeded eastbound on U.S. Highway 98 to Jack Crum Road where Hart increased her speed to more than 100 miles per hour. Due to the excessive speed, detectives broke off the chase as Hart continued on.

The detectives searched the area and discovered that Hart drove her vehicle onto Robinson Hill Road and crashed through a fence and into a tree before fleeing the vehicle on foot.

All the law enforcement response teams set up a perimeter and the WCI K-9 Unit began tracking the suspect. She was observed by Detective Randy Phillips in a wooded area and he gave chase.

Shortly thereafter, Deputy Billy Metcalf observed Hart attempting to cross Jack Crum Road toward the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. After a short foot pursuit, Hart was taken into custody in the wood line without further incident at 12:30 p.m.

Hart faces charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, fleeing and eluding, resisting arrest without violence, possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, burglary, grand theft and an out of county warrant in the Medart incident. During the arrest process, Hart was found in possession of a pouch that contained crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia. The crack cocaine weighed .7 of a gram.

Hart is also a suspect in several Wakulla County burglaries and deputies discovered stolen property inside the vehicle prior to towing her vehicle back to the WCSO Impound Yard.

Hart was transported to the Wakulla County Jail where she is being held with no bond. Investigators estimate that Hart will have more than 130 warrants from all the arresting agencies once the investigation concludes.
