The City of Apalachicola has received the State's second highest honors for its interpretative signage and walking tour brochures as part of the 2015 Visit Florida Flagler Awards competition. The installation was honored during the 48th Annual Florida Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Tampa August 31-September 2. The City of Apalachicola was the only municipality in the State of Florida to receive the 2015 Visit Florida Flagler Silver Award in the category of "Rural County Marketing." The interpretative signage project was designed by Bay Media Services with research input from several organizations including the Apalachicola Historical Society, Apalachicola Maritime Museum and installation assistance from the Apalachicola Main Street group. The project was funded through Visit Florida grants and the Franklin County Tourism Development Council. The series was designed and implemented in 2013-14 as a multi-media campaign to encourage visitors to walk Apalachicola’s historic waterfront, learn the town’s history and then stay, eat and shop. Extensive research, old photos and consistent design of the displays branded the campaign as a connected trail of signage. The interpretative displays are strategically placed along the town’s river and bayfront at scenic overlooks and near historic sites to draw visitors to the City’s public amenities where they linger, read and then pause to enjoy adjacent museums, restaurants and shopping. An accompanying brochure map encourages visitors to explore all of the displays and then expand their tour to include the City’s other museums and public parks and sites located off the waterfront. An embedded QR code on both the brochure and each display leads the visitor back to the City’s website where they can learn more or different aspects about the town and area.
