Franklin County’s coastline is a lot cleaner thanks to a few
hundred volunteers and a lot of work.
The
annual Coastal Cleanup was held last Saturday removing over 7 and a half tons of trash and debris from the local waterfront.
In
total 438 volunteers took part in the
one-day cleanup on Saturday and picked up a total of 533 bags of trash.
The
volunteers this year ranged in age from 4 to 78.
Nearly
8000 pounds of trash was picked up at Bald Point State Park, another 2500
pounds came from Carrabelle.
Over
1500 pounds of trash was picked up on St. George Island and about a thousand
pounds of trash each was removed from the shorelines in Eastpoint and
Apalachicola.
The
trash was primarily cans, bottles, cigarette butts, plastic, styrofoam, fishing gear, ropes,
and other litter.
But there was also an auto grille, a sailboat,
a portable toilet, a frog gig, 3 cigars in an airtight container and even a
Michael Bolton CD found during the cleanup.
