Area 1611 of the Apalachicola Bay
will close at sunset today.
Area1611 is the
approved Winter Shellfish Harvesting Area.
The Department of
Agriculture said they will close that area as a precaution because of the
possible presence of red tide.
Red tide was found
from a sample taken at Indian Pass.
Red
Tide is a organism that in large enough concentrations releases a neurotoxin
that can kill fish and even affect humans.
It was
last seen in Franklin County in 2005, when it closed the Apalachicola bay to
oyster harvesting for close to 6 months.
Water samples will
continue to be collected and analyzed for the area until the sample results
conform to the management plan.
