Red tide found at Indian Pass - area 1611 closed to oyster harvesting as a precaution

Area 1611 of the Apalachicola Bay will close at sunset today.
Area1611 is the approved Winter Shellfish Harvesting Area.
The Department of Agriculture said they will close that area as a precaution because of the possible presence of red tide.
Red tide was found from a sample taken at Indian Pass.
Red Tide is a organism that in large enough concentrations releases a neurotoxin that can kill fish and even affect humans.
It was last seen in Franklin County in 2005, when it closed the Apalachicola bay to oyster harvesting for close to 6 months.

Water samples will continue to be collected and analyzed for the area until the sample results conform to the management plan.
