On October 1, 2015, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Deputies, Carrabelle Police Dept, Apalachicola Police Dept. and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Narcotics Unit, executed warrants for the arrest of 12 people in the Franklin County Area. Most of the charges are for “Sale of a Controlled Substance”, including Methamphetamine and Marijuana. Over the past year the Sheriff’s Office has had an increased number of complaints about Meth in our county and feels it is becoming a much more serious problem for our communities to face. Even though the people arrested were some of the major players dealing in Meth, we’re working diligently to eradicate this drug from our homes and our community.
Methamphetamine, among many other drugs, proposes many dangers to our towns that reaches far beyond the person using or selling, and the crime associated with obtaining these substances. Meth labs produce a large amount of hazardous waste that is often poured into the ground, or nearby water sources. This waste can cause immediate and long term dangers. The more immediate dangers are from the vapors created while cooking Meth. These toxic fumes can cause brain damage and are highly flammable, creating a great risk to fire or explosions. Also, the vapors produced can permeate the walls and flooring in the building or home it was made in, creating a possible uninhabitable condition for anyone to live in without the home being treated and cleaned specifically to remove the chemicals left behind from the Meth lab.
