Franklin County awarded grant to rehab substandard housing

Franklin County has been awarded 700 thousand dollars to rehabilitate or replace substandard homes in the unincorporated areas of the county.

The money will be provided through a Community Development Block Grant to help lower income families either repair or replace their homes and bring them up to current building standards.

The program may even help rehabilitate some mobile homes.

People who take part in the program would not be required to pay the loan back as long as they continue to live in and maintain the home for a certain number of years.

That could be 5 years for a 25 thousand dollar loan and 10 years for loans over 40 thousand dollars.

Last week the board agreed to accept the grant and to begin the search for a grant administrator.
