October is Florida Native
Plant month in Franklin County.
County Commissioners adopted a
resolution declaring this Native Plant Month at the request of the Florida
Native Plant Society – a group dedicated to preserving native plants and
protecting the state from non- native species.
The group was formed in 1980 and now has 37
chapters and 3500 members statewide – there is even a chapter in Franklin
county- the group raises money for conservation and research and helps teach
Floridians about the benefits of native plants.
And Franklin County has plenty to
protect – its home to a number of threatened or endangered native plant
species.
It’s also home to the Ogeechee
tupelo which you need for tupelo honey and Highway 98, Highway 65 and Highway
67 are all part of the Florida panhandle wildflower map.
