Music in the Park Wraps
Our Music in the Park series this year was a great success, even with a minor setback. Regretfully, Heat and the Zydeco Gents had a family emergency and had to cancel. But, we luckily had the Jam Kings fill in, and they were a great substitute. This year we met a new group, the Crickets, and the crowd really enjoyed this all-girl band, as they did all the other great bands this year. Our volunteer fire department had a successful fund-raising event this year by offering hot dog and hamburger dinners to the crowd. Special thank-yous go to Sharon’s Cafe and PeoplesSouth Bank for the generous food donations used by the fire department. We hope everyone enjoyed this year’s concert series and will make plans to attend next year! For more details and to find that perfect getaway, click here.

Meet Mexico Beach
This month we want to introduce you to some of our annual visitors who have vacationed in Mexico Beach for many, many years. The Utz family from Georgia enjoys spending their vacations in Mexico Beach. Father Joe runs in the fall triathlon, while mother Elizabeth and the children enjoy all that Mexico Beach has to offer. The last time they were here, there were seven children; however, the recent addition of Elliott brings this year’s trip total to eight. The children read music, play instruments and sing. They have performed at Music in the Park, and this time they played for our Mexico Beach on the Move TV show. For those who subscribe to Mediacom, you can enjoy hearing them now.

Thoughts for the Month
October is World Series month. Here are some interesting facts about the game:
✯ Harry Chiti was playing for the Cleveland Indians in 1962 and got traded to the New York Mets for a player to be named later. Chiti had a bad time with the Mets and was then designated as the player to be named later and sent back to Cleveland. He was the first major league player to be traded for himself.
✯ Fourteen players have hit four home runs in one game. Among them are Lou Gehrig, Willie Mays and Mike Schmidt.
✯ The New York Yankees have won 26 World Series titles—more than any other team. Yankee Mickey Mantle holds the record for the most career home runs in World Series history at 18.
✯ Baltimore Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken didn’t miss a game in 16 years (2,632 consecutive games).
✯ Elmer Smith played for the Cleveland Indians and in 1920, he hit the first grand slam home run in a World Series game.
✯ In 1925, first baseman Wally Pipp asked for a day off and manager Miller Huggins agreed. Huggins designated a new kid named Lou Gehrig to play first base. Gehrig didn’t leave the lineup for 14 years; Pipp lost his job and never played for the Yankees again. Gehrig was sometimes known as the “Iron Horse of Baseball.”
✯ Pete Rose played for the Cincinnati Reds and holds the all-time record for hits—4,256.
✯ Pitcher Bob Feller and outfielder Denard Span have something in common. Both fouled off pitches that went into the stands and hit their mothers, who had come to watch their sons play; both moms were OK. But in 1957, Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn of the Phillies fouled off a ball that went into the stands and hit Alice Roth in the face. While medical help was assisting her, the teams went back to the game and Richie Ashburn was still at the plate. He fouled off another pitch and it hit Alice Roth again as she was being carried off on a stretcher!
