WHATEVER FLOATS YOUR BOAT REGATTA TO FEATURE AN AFTERNOON OF INGENUITY, FAILURE AND LAUGHS

Florida State University’s Coastal & Marine Laboratory (FSUCML) invites you this Saturday to witness the thrills and spills of the 4th Annual Whatever Floats Your Boat Regatta in the beautiful coastal area of St. Teresa, Fla. located in the Big Bend region.
The regatta features “boats” made from scratch by participating teams that are raced around a predetermined course for fun and prizes. Stressing an environmental conservation theme, each “boat” must be created from a list of approved recyclable materials and, at least initially, should be able to float. Past regattas have included boats made entirely out of materials such as aluminum cans and plastic bottles, and featured boat shapes ranging from canoes to giant sea turtles.
“Protecting our coastline and beaches is a serious task, but it doesn’t mean we can’t teach people the importance of conservation in fun and exciting ways,” said Felicia Coleman, director of the FSUCML. “This year’s regatta is poised to be our best yet and I can’t wait to see what our participants have in store for us as they race around the track, trying feverishly to keep their boats above water.”
With race objectives and prizes aimed more at staying afloat than being the fastest to the finish line, fun and laughter are the themes of the day. Prize categories for regatta participants include:
  • Most creative use of materials
  • First boat to cross the finish line
  • Titanic award for the most spectacular failure
  • People’s Choice award
The regatta will also feature a special treat this year with members of the FSUCML building and racing their own recycled material-based boat alongside community participants.
The regatta will take place:
NOON – 3 P.M.
SATURDAY, OCT. 3
FSU COASTAL AND MARINE LABORATORY
3618 COASTAL HIGHWAY 98
ST. TERESA, FLA.
Public viewing of the boats is from noon to 1:00 p.m. with the races beginning shortly after. The race will be fully visible from various shoreline vantage points around the Marine Lab and the nearby boat basin. Food will be available for purchase from Coastal Restaurant.
