Commission Meeting – Panama City
Action: Marine Fisheries items to be discussed Nov. 18-19
Information: The FWC Commission will discuss several marine fisheries management items Nov. 18-19 at the meeting in Panama City including:
Discussions on:
- Federal fishery management updates – Includes discussion on recent federal closures for greater amberjack and red grouper in Gulf waters. Staff will seek direction as to whether to close these recreational fisheries in Gulf state waters throughDec. 31.
- Innovations in Marine Fisheries Management – An update on a survey and workshops held over the summer to gather public input on marine fisheries management.
- Red snapper regional management - Staff will seek direction on potential Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council action to manage certain aspects of the recreational red snapper fishery on a regional (potentially state-by-state) basis.
- Mutton snapper - Staff will present a summary of stakeholder concerns about mutton snapper regulations and present potential management changes for the recreational and commercial mutton snapper fisheries for Commission discussion.
- Annual workplan – Staff presents plans for upcoming fiscal year.
Regulatory changes on:
- Dwarf seahorse: Creating additional conservation measures.

Saltwater License-Free Fishing Day

Information: Florida residents and visitors can experience Florida’s unique saltwater fishing opportunities without being required to have a recreational saltwater fishing license onNov. 28
All bag limits, seasons and size restrictions apply.
There are eight license-free fishing days each year including four freshwater and four saltwater.
An annual license for residents can be purchased at 1-888-FISH-Florida or at License.MyFWC.com. All fishing license fees are used to support Florida fish and wildlife conservation and help attain additional funding for Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration projects.

Snook Symposium

Barracuda
Action: New recreational and commercial bag limits effective Nov. 1
Information: New recreational and commercial bag limits for barracuda go into effect Nov. 1 for state and federal waters off Collier, Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Martin counties only.
The new limits include:
- Two fish per person daily recreational and commercial bag limit.
- Six fish per vessel daily recreational and commercial limit.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approved these new management measures at itsSept. 3 meeting in Fort Lauderdale after hearing stakeholder concerns about declining barracuda numbers observed when fishing and diving in southeast Florida and the Florida Keys. FWC staff gathered public input from stakeholders at workshops conducted earlier this year. The FWC is responding to concerns by creating bag limits to prevent further declines and conserve barracuda in the region. Further workshops on barracuda conservation measures are planned for early 2016.
