Two Florida State University professors were recently
awarded grants to study oil spill prevention in the Gulf of Mexico.
On December 10th, the National Academy of Science awarded
4.4 million dollars for nine "data synthesis grants” to enhance oil system
safety and the protection of human health and the environment in the Gulf of
Mexico and other U.S. outer continental shelf areas.
The recipients included Florida State Professor of
Oceanography Allan J. Clarke and research scientist Steven Morey.
Allan
Clarke was granted $433,000 to study the flow of the top centimeter of surface
water in the Gulf.
His team will be combining numerical models and the flow
of surface currents to create a better oil spill model that "will enable
us if there's another oil spill, to predict where it goes."
Steve Morey was awarded nearly 900 thousand dollars as
part of a multi-institutional project to better understand the deep environments
of the Gulf so that future deep water oil rigs can be engineered to withstand
the harsh environment.
