Homes evacuated after chlorine leak at wastewater treatment plant

A number of homes around the Apalachicola wastewater treatment plant were evacuated for about four hours Friday after workers found a chlorine leak.
The leak was detected from a storage canister of chlorine gas at the treatment plant.
The discovery forced the evacuation of three streets surrounding the facility including Chapman Road, Alan Drive and Thomas Drive.
Apalachicola firefighters blocked off the roads leading to the plant and went door to door to alert residents.
A HazMat team from Leon County was called to seal the canister – it did take them a few hours to reach the scene.
Once here, they were able to quickly put the canister in a larger container and stop the leak.
Residents were allowed back to their homes just after 1:30.

Officials say they don’t know how much chlorine was released in the incident.
