Lanark Village could get grant for "community dumpster program"

The Florida Fish and wildlife Conservation Commission might be able to help Lanark Village with some of its trash issues.
FWC has offered to provide a 20 thousand dollar grant that would allow Lanark Village to create a “community dumpster program” where residents could dispose of both household trash and recycling.
The plan at this time would create a fenced-in area adjacent to the boat yard which would contain two bear-proof roll-a-way containers.
One container would be for household garbage and the other for recycling.
The Lanark Village Association would control access to the site, and set a schedule for when people can dispose of their trash.
The cost of the containers and trash pick-up would be covered by the grant.
County Coordinator Michael Moron said that since this is a test program, there is no expectation that the County would continue to fund the program once the grant funding is depleted.
The hope is the program would alleviate some of the littering and black bear problems in Lanark Village.
County commissioners closed the recycling center in Lanark Village last August because the program was being abused by people who threw their household trash into the recycling bins and drew bears and other animals to the site.

At one point commissioners discussed mandatory garbage pickup around the county – but have not yet taken any action on that proposal.
