Can you imagine Florida without Refrigeration, Ice, or Air Conditioning? Franklin County Civic leader and Physician John Gorrie is widely credited with being the father of refrigeration and air-conditioning. A statute recognizing John Gorrie is one of the two Statute representing Florida in Statuary Hall in the nation’s Capitol Building. The other statute is of General Edmund Kirby Smith.
Today at 1:00pm the Florida Senate Rules Committee in Room 110 will consider SB 310 legislation providing for the replacement of General Edmund Kirby Smith in the National Statuary Hall Collection at the United State Capitol.

Last week, a House committee amended HB 141 legislation to provide for replacement of Dr. John Gorrie as well as replacing General Edmund Kirby Smith.
Today’s Senate Rule Committee meeting is the final committee stop before SB 310 goes to the Senate floor. The House bill (HB 141) has one additional Committee stop before it proceeds to the House Floor.
Although there has been controversy relating to having General Edmund Kirby Smith representing Florida – there has been no concern expressed about Dr. John Gorrie.
Gorrie is recognized a doctor and civic leader – who lived his adult life in Apalachicola – is widely recognized for his patent for a machine to make ice and is credited with the father of refrigeration and air-conditioning.
The members of the Senate Rules Committee need to hear from individuals regarding keeping the bill clear of any effort to remove John Gorrie.
It would be advisable to have interested individuals call the members of the Senate Committee to request –
