39
volunteers came to St. George Island last Friday to help plant sea oats at the
St. George Island public beach.
The event was called Duke Energy In Action.
The sea oats planting was a cooperative effort
between Duke Energy and the Franklin County Emergency Management Office.
Sea oats can trap wind-blown sand and promote sand dune growth,
while their deep roots help stabilize the dunes and protect beaches and
property from damage due to high winds, storm surges and tides.
Dune protection is important not only to maintain the
beach but for sea turtle survival, because most turtles dig their nests within
the dune line on Florida beaches.
