Work should begin soon on
renovations to the former Estuarine Research Reserve building at Scipio Creek
in Apalachicola.
The building has been vacant
since 2011 when the Estuarine Research Reserve moved to a new nature center in
Eastpoint.
It will one day house the
Franklin county Extension Office; The Extension office received 250 thousand
dollars in state money last year to pay for the renovations which include work
on the building and on the street in front of it.
The University of Florida is
matching that amount and will ultimately own the building.
The building needs some major repairs
including a new roof.
It also needs to be brought into
compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
County Extension Director Erik
Lovestrand said he expects his office to make the move in early 2017.
The demolition work should begin
in late summer and the construction should take place from September to
December of this year.
