FWC meets in Eastpoint on Wednesday and Thursday

                The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will meet at the Franklin County School in Eastpoint on Wednesday and Thursday so don’t be surprised by the extra traffic.

FWC meetings are usually well attended and bring hundreds of people and some good advertising for the area.

The FWC is expecting a bigger crowd than usual for this week’s meeting because they are going to discuss holding another black bear hunt this year, and there are a lot of people with strong feelings on that particular issue.

Florida held its first black bear hunt in over 20 years last year - it ended after only two days.

295 black bears were killed during the hunt.

There are a number of people who feel the black bear hunt is unnecessary and that the black bear population is not yet large enough to handle hunting.

There are also a lot of people who feel the black bear hunt is needed to control the population and keep bears out of neighborhoods.

And black bears won’t be the only item of interest on the agenda; the FWC will also decide whether to cancel this summer’s bay scallop season in the St. Joe Bay because of the impact of red tide on the scallop population.

The FWC meeting will be held June the 22nd and 23rd at the Franklin county School – its begins at 830 both days.
