Indiana tourist drowns and two rescuers are injured off St. George Island in rough waters caused by Tropical Storm Colin

A visitor to St. George Island drowned Monday evening in the rough surf off the Plantation.
The Franklin County sheriff’s office said a 46 year old woman visiting from Indiana drowned in the rough surf and her husband and a good Samaritan required medical treatment after trying to rescue her.
Sheriff’s deputies were called to a home at 2334 Shellfish Drive in the St. George Plantation at about 645 Monday evening.
When they arrived they found first responders and EMTs performing CPR on a woman at the beach.
The woman had gone swimming in the 6 to 8 foot seas caused by tropical storm Colin.
When she became distressed her husband entered the rough water to save her; he also found himself caught in the high waves.
A third person, a 36 year old man visiting from Texas, was able to rescue the husband.
Other passersby managed to pull the wife’s body from the Gulf.
The wife was pronounced dead at Weems Memorial Hospital; the husband was treated for water inhalation and released.

The good Samaritan was taken to Bay Medical in Panama city to be treated for water inhalation.
