The
Florida Department of Agriculture will show the required educational seminar for
shellfish harvesters Monday through Friday through the month of June.
Oystermen
have to watch the 25 minute educational training program in order to get the Apalachicola
Bay Oyster Harvesters license.
The seminar focuses on proper shellfish handling
practices during and after harvest to reduce the risk of illness due to Vibrio vulnifcus.
During
the month of June, the educational training video will be shown at the
Shellfish Center in Apalachicola every weekday at 3 PM.
The seminar is
also available on-line at myfwc.com/shellfish.
When you go to the
site you will have to create an account, so that once you’ve finished with the
seminar you can get a participation certificate which you will need to get your
oyster harvesting license.
And
don’t forget to get your new oyster license before the end of the month.
The
Department of Agriculture is accepting Applications for the Apalachicola Bay
Oyster Harvesting License through June 30th.
Until
that date, the licenses will cost 100 dollars.
If
you wait until after the 30th to get your license, the price jumps
by 500 bucks, so make sure to take care of it as soon as possible.
Licenses
can only be obtained at the Apalachicola Shellfish Center, which is located at
Scipio Creek in Apalachicola.
