Time is running out to submit ideas on which
important Floridian should have a statue in the US Capitol Building.
Each state has two
statues in the U.S. Capitol's National Statuary Hall.
Florida is currently
represented by Apalachicola’s own John Gorrie, who invented the air conditioner
and Confederate Army general Edmund Kirby Smith.
The Legislature recently
voted to remove the statue of Edmund Kirby Smith, but now need to name a
replacement.
The Florida Department of
State announced on Wednesday it has created an online
survey to begin accepting names of Floridians who
deserve a statue in the US Capital.
People can make
suggestions until June 10th.
A committee will then
trim the list to 3 people and the legislature will then decide whose statue
will be made to replace Smith.
If you would like to make a suggestion, just
go to the Florida Department of State website at http://dos.myflorida.com/
