The Florida
Audubon Society Florida Department of Environmental Protection will begin a
project over the next 6 months to restore the retaining walls around the old
St. George Island bridge causeway.
The causeway was left when the
old St. George Island Bridge was demolished in 2005; it is currently designated
as a critical wildlife area and used as a nesting site by a number of species
of shorebirds including brown pelicans, black skimmers, American
oystercatchers and a number of varieties of terns.
But age and water are taking
their toll on the retaining walls that protect the island so they will be
restored over the coming year.
The project will be funded through
restoration funds from the BP oil spill.
Work should begin in the next 6
months.
