Franklin County approves overtime pay to expedite Hermine clean-up effort

You should see more post-Hurricane Hermine cleaning going on starting this week.
On Tuesday County Commissioners approved paying overtime to county solid waste and road camp workers so they can spend more hours removing debris from local roads and county property.
Till now the county has been hesitant to approve overtime because they were waiting for a federal disaster declaration which would mean overtime pay would be covered by FEMA.
Governor Rick Scott has requested a federal disaster declaration but it could be weeks before that request is approved or rejected.
Commissioners say they can’t wait that long to clean up the mess left by the hurricane, so they agreed to pay overtime using county money in the hopes it will be reimbursed by the federal government.
Solid Waste Director Fonda Davis said it could take a few weeks to complete the clean-up project.
The county right now is focusing on clean-up, not on repairing docks or dune walkovers that were damaged or destroyed in the storm.
Repair work could be very expensive, and commissioners are concerned that it could cause budget problems if the money is not reimbursed.

Commissioner Smokey Parish also pointed out that it might be a good idea to save the repairs for after Hurricane Season in case we are impacted by another major storm this year.
