October is Domestic Violence Awareness month in Franklin County

County Commissioners last week approved a resolution declaring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Franklin County.

The proclamation recognizes domestic violence as an epidemic, not just locally but nationwide.

It also draws attention to children in violent homes who are more likely to succumb to drug abuse and truancy and are more likely to exhibit violent behavior in later life.

The resolution calls on residents to help make Franklin County a zero tolerance zone for domestic violence and to work with established agencies to provide women and children the security they deserve.

If you are a victim of domestic violence and would like to get help there is a group called refuge House dedicated to helping victims.

You can reach their hotline number 24 hours a day at 850-681-2111.

In 2012 and 2013, Refuge House responded to 2,866 domestic violence-related hotline calls from its 8 county region including Franklin county.

385 women, children and men sought safety in one of their emergency shelters.

If you would like to learn more about the domestic violence problem in our area, there will be a Domestic Violence Awareness Month Luncheon on Friday, October the 14th from noon to 1 at the Realtor Association office at 78 11th street in Apalachicola.
