NOAA seeks nominations to fill 10 vacancies on the Marine Protected Areas Federal Advisory Committee for 2017-2020. The committee advises the Departments of Commerce and the Interior on the national system of marine protected areas (MPAs) and MPA programs. NOAA seeks nominees representing diverse ocean interests. The deadline for nominations has been extended toOctober 11.
In 2006, conservation-minded individuals created the National Fish Habitat Action Plan, later renamed the National Fish Habitat Partnership. NOAA supports the Partnership's goals by providing leadership, technical expertise, and funding to support fish habitat conservation activities. Check out a few joint accomplishments of NOAA and the National Fish Habitat Partnership.
The Government Accountability Office released its report on NOAA Fisheries' efforts to address the effects of climate change on federally managed fish stocks and fisheries. The report highlights NOAA Fisheries' efforts to improve climate-related information in fisheries management through the Climate Science Strategy and associated Regional Action Plans. The report also provides recommendations for moving forward, which NOAA Fisheries will address as part of our Climate Science Strategy.
Do you know people or organizations who have made important gains in safeguarding the nation's natural resources in a changing climate? Recognize their achievements by nominating them for a 2017 Climate Adaptation Leadership Award for Natural Resources. NOAA is a co-sponsor of this award. Nominations are due November 18.
On Monday, members of the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) of Wild Fauna and Flora adopted the United States' proposal to list nautilus species in CITES' Appendix II. This listing will require trade controls be put in place to ensure that trade in nautilus shells is sustainable.

A mounting number of news reports, internet videos, and social media posts document tourists harassing seals and sea lions and their pups for the sake of a photo. These interactions are illegal, and they put both animals and humans at risk. NOAA Fisheries' West Coast Region launched the #ShareTheShore campaign to promote safe wildlife viewing.
By November 29, please submit your comments on a proposed amendment to the Pacific Coast Groundfish Fishery Management Plan. Amendment 27 would add deacon rockfish to the management plan, reclassify big skate as an actively managed stock, and add a new inseason management process for certain fisheries in California, among other modifications.
A new report by the Northwest Fisheries Science Center provides a comprehensive look at marine conditions in Puget Sound in 2015. The report was produced for the Puget Sound Ecosystem Monitoring Program's Marine Waters Workgroup.

October 25-28, NOAA Fisheries will convene a workshop, open to the public, to solicit expert information to inform recovery planning for the Main Hawaiian Islands insular false killer whale distinct population segment. By December 5, please submit pertinent information that has become available since October 2013, when we published the Notice of Intent to prepare a recovery plan for the population.

Biscayne Bay is a shallow, clear-water bay centered within the Miami metropolitan area on Florida's lower southeast coast. A coral reef runs parallel to the bay, extending northward from the Florida Keys. Learn more about Biscayne Bay - one of NOAA Fisheries' 10 Habitat Focus Areas - and ongoing efforts to protect and restore it by exploring our new story map.
An investigation by NOAA's Office of Law Enforcement, with the assistance of the U.S. Coast Guard and North Carolina and Virginia state agencies, uncovered illegal poaching of striped bass in the federal waters off North Carolina in 2010. Last month, Dewey W. Willis, Jr., of Newport, North Carolina, pled guilty to the charges in federal court.

Come visit NOAA Fisheries outreach and aquaculture experts at the annual Wellfleet OysterFest on Cape Cod, October 15-16. NOAA has been a partner in the festival since its inception in 2002, and today NOAA Fisheries and partners use the opportunity to collect used oyster shell for coastal restoration efforts and to engage with our seafood-loving communities about sustainable U.S. seafood.
Meet NOAA's Northeast Regional Coordinator for the Marine Debris Program, Keith Cialino. Marine debris is a substantial and growing problem worldwide, with consequences for marine life, human health, and the fishing and tourism industries. NOAA's Marine Debris Program works with partner organizations to research, remove, and prevent marine debris.
Staff from NOAA Fisheries' Greater Atlantic Regional Fisheries Office recently attended a 3-day workshop in New Hampshire to learn from the experts - commercial fishermen - about the complexities of commercial fishing gear. Overall, the workshop provided an opportunity for dialogue between fishermen, scientists, and managers.
NOAA Fisheries and the New England and Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Councils are holding public meetings to solicit comments on the Draft Industry-Funded Monitoring Omnibus Amendment. NOAA Fisheries recently posted a public hearing document with background information, descriptions of the alternatives, and questions for the public to consider. The draft amendment and draft environmental assessment are also online.
