When Hurricane Hermine hit Florida’s Gulf Coast, flooding caused several manatees to be displaced in a pond on a golf course in Crystal River. Plans were put into action on September 15 as the FWC, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo, Clearwater Marine Aquarium and other partners successfully rescued eight healthy manatees, including a mother-calf pair. Once the animals were moved out of the pond, they received health assessments before being released back into the wild. We’d like to thank biologists, partners, law enforcement, volunteers and members of the public for working together to help protect and conserve manatees and their habitats!
The beautifully marked Caribbean spiny lobster has long been a Florida seafood favorite and is arguably one of the state's most important fisheries. These eggbearing females have tens of thousands of orange or brown eggs under their tail and are illegal to harvest. It's the little things that go a long way toward conserving this important species!
