Florida Forest Service Issues Fire Weather Warning and Asks Local Residents to Refrain from Burning

Tallahassee, Fla – Officials with the Florida Forest Service’s Tallahassee Forestry Center are urging residents of Liberty, Gadsden, Leon, Wakulla, Jefferson and Franklin counties to refrain from any outdoor burning for the next several days.

The area is in the midst of an extended dry spell and a predicted cold front will bring higher winds and lower humidity. There is little to no rain in the extended forecast. This combination has increased the fire danger for the area. With these conditions, even well-intended backyard fires can be dangerous.

“Because of the cooler weather, residents will likely want to get out and get some yard work done,” said Chris Colburn, Tallahassee Center Manager. “However, the Florida Forest Service is asking the public to refrain from burning collected yard debris until we see some relief from these dry, dangerous conditions.”

Some things residents can do around their home now to increase wildfire safety and protect their home include the following:
·         Create a wildfire preparedness plan with your family.
·         Remove flammable or dry vegetation located on and around home up to 30 feet and dispose of it according to local city or county regulations (Refrain from burning collected yard debris at this time).
·         Keep lawn trimmed and watered (according to local water regulations).
·         Make sure residence is clearly marked for emergency response personnel.

The Florida Forest Service, a division of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, manages more than one million acres of public forest land while protecting homes, forestland and natural resources from the devastating effects of wildfire on more than 26 million acres.
