Forestry officials urge fire safety

Officials with the Florida Forest Service’s Tallahassee Forestry Center are urging residents of Liberty, Gadsden, Leon, Wakulla, Jefferson and Franklin counties to refrain from any outdoor burning for the next several days.

The area is in the midst of an extended dry spell and a recent cold weather has made things even drier.

And there is very little rain expected in the near future, so fire conditions will likely worsen.

A dry as things are, even well-intended backyard fires can be dangerous.

Some things residents can do around their home now to increase wildfire safety and protect their home include creating a wildfire preparedness plan with your family.

You can find out how to do that on-line at freshfromflorida.com

You should also remove flammable or dry vegetation within 30 feet of your home and keep your lawn trimmed and watered.

And a very easy step to take is to make sure that your street number is clearly marked for emergency response personnel.
