Just west of Tallahassee, FWC freshwater fisheries biologists are conducting many ongoing research projects from our Joe Budd Field Office in Quincy, FL. In our latest video, FWC biologist Andy Strickland discusses some of these projects, including long-term monitoring on Lake Jackson and Lake Talquin and ongoing work with shoal bass, striped and white bass. On Nov. 21, we witnessed a feeding frenzy near the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute headquarters on Bayboro Harbor in St. Petersburg, FL. A school of young crevalle jack (Caranx hippos) had hundreds of pinfish cornered near a seawall. Typically, schools of crevalle jack will corner a school of baitfish at the surface and feed with commotion that can be seen at great distances. Crevalle jacks are common in both inshore waters and the open sea, and they feed mainly on small fish.
Our Mission: Through effective research and technical knowledge, we provide timely information and guidance to protect, conserve and manage Florida's fish and wildlife resources.
