Afternoon Wildfire Update


SOUTHPORT, Fla. – Local County Commissions have enacted burn bans due to weather conditions and recent wildfire activities. These counties include Bay, Holmes, Washington, Walton, Jackson, Calhoun, Gulf and Franklin.

These burn bans prohibit the burning of yard waste, household paper products, bonfires, campfires, warming fires, outdoor fire places, chimneys, and cooking fires.

Weather conditions in our area are expected to create extreme fire behavior for the next few days. Any fire that occurs has the potential to immediately escalate into complex incidents.

Winter Hill Fire: This wildfire is East of Hwy 77 and continues to burn in an area with swampy terrain and heavy timber making accessibility difficult. The forward progression of this fire has been stopped. No structures have been damaged. Firefighters continue to improve fire lines and mop up hotspots as they work through the evening. This fire is currently estimated around 120 acres with 60% containment.

Mussett Bayou Fire: Containment lines are continuing to be strengthened and improved. This Fire is currently 343 Acres with 90% containment. A large pump was deployed to divert water on hotspots in a swampy area. Crews continue to use brush trucks for improved containment. The Florida Forest Service will remain on this fire until it is controlled.

The Florida Forest Service is also responsible for protecting homes, forestland and natural resources from the devastating effects of wildfire on more than 26 million acres.
