Firefighters respond to High Hill Fire on the Apalachicola National Forest

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., May 11, 2020 – Firefighters on the Apalachicola National Forest are responding to the High Hill Fire in Wakulla County.

Earlier today, firefighters responded to a report received at 12:10 p.m. of smoke spotted near the Clear Lake Wilderness Study Area on the Apalachicola National Forest. They soon located the wildfire 6 miles south of Highway 20 and east of Smith Creek Road. At that time, the wildfire was estimated at 30 acres and has now grown to approximately 300-400 acres in size.

A fireline was completed around the west side of the fire to protect residential structures and Wakulla County Fire Rescue is providing structural protection support. USDA Forest Service firefighters along with Florida Forest Service firefighters continue to put in firelines and conduct suppression operations to protect structures to the east and south of the wildfire.

There are smoke impacts to Highway 20 and Smith Creek Road in the vicinity of the wildfire and Florida Highway Patrol is on scene. Smoke impacts may limit visibility. People should use caution when driving through the area and turn on their lights.
