Restoring Wisconsin Point Peninsula in the St. Louis River Estuary Habitat Focus Area

habitat
The Wisconsin Point peninsula along Lake Superior is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. It is also a living heritage site for the indigenous people of the land, particularly the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Increased human use of the peninsula, however, has resulted in shoreline erosion and dune wear-and-tear at lake access points.

Pink Salmon May Benefit as Pacific Arctic Warms

The Pacific Arctic is undergoing a rapid transformation. As temperatures rise and sea ice melts, some species will do better than others. A new study suggests that pink salmon may be one of the species that benefits.

A River Reconnected: Removing the Pilchuck River Diversion Dam

river dam
Washington’s Pilchuck River is close to flowing freely after more than 100 years, thanks to a NOAA-supported effort to remove an obsolete dam. Once restoration work is complete, the project will reopen 37 miles of habitat for fish and help protect downstream communities from flooding.

Hawaiian Monk Seal Translocation Project Improves Survival

A recent study indicates that our Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program’s translocation efforts from 2012 to 2014 were highly successful. Translocation—the deliberate movement of organisms from one site for release in another—has been broadly applied for centuries to manage and conserve terrestrial wildlife. But it is far less common in the marine world, and is rarely applied to marine mammals.

Saving a Humpback Whale: A Disentanglement Tale

On July 27 trained responders began a 4-day effort to disentangle a humpback whale from submerged fishing gear near New York City. Multiple partners brought their expertise and large boats to haul the heavy gear up and free the whale.

Loggerhead Turtles Record a Passing Hurricane

In early June 2011, NOAA Fisheries researchers and colleagues placed satellite tags on 26 loggerhead sea turtles in the Mid-Atlantic Bight to study their movements and behavior. In the wake of Hurricane Irene in August 2011, researchers were able to track changes in the turtles’ behavior coinciding with the hurricane.
