Franklin County Commissioners have given their support for an effort in Liberty County to obtain state-owned property to mine fossilized shell to help in the restoration of oyster reef complexes in Apalachicola Bay

Franklin County Commissioners have given their support for an effort in Liberty County to obtain state-owned property to mine fossilized shell to help in the restoration of oyster reef complexes in Apalachicola Bay.

The property being requested is located in the southeastern corner of Tate's Hell State Forest.

Chris Langston, who brought the issue to the board, said there would be a land swap of private property adjacent to Tate's Hell so that the potential mining site can be removed from the Tate's Hell management plan.

The plan is also being supported by a number of other counties including Jefferson, Wakulla and Gadsden Counties.

The vote to support the plan was divided 3 to 2 with Commissioners Smokey Parrish and Ricky Jones opposing the motion.
