Franklin County will hold a series of workshops this summer to discuss code enforcement around the county.

For years the county commission has considered hiring a code enforcement officer to enforce many of the county's building codes, but the position has never been created.

That has allowed for a lot of people to violate county rules with no repercussions unless they are turned in by another resident.

The 5 workshops this summer will be overseen by the Apalachee Regional Planning Council and will be held in communities in the unincorporated area of Franklin County like Eastpoint, St. George Island and Alligator Point.

The commission said having the ARPC oversee the meetings will insure that the issue doesn't become political and the group will also be able to help by collecting code enforcement information from other counties which can help citizens and commissioners make a more informed decision on the issue.

The information will be collected and the ARPC will provide a report at the end of the summer to help commissioners decided if creating a code enforcement position is necessary.

The meetings will likely be in-person as well as on-line.

The first meetings are expected to begin in June.
