Eastpoint's business district will be a little brighter in the near future

Eastpoint's business district will be a little brighter in the near future.

The Franklin County Commission has approved plans to install 16 streetlights on Highway 98 in Eastpoint between 2nd street and Bayshore Drive.

That area is considered the Business District; it is also the area with the most pedestrian traffic across Highway 98.

Over the years there have been a number of traffic accidents in the area, some including pedestrians.

It's also hoped that increased lighting will reduce crime and drug activity.

The cost is a 344 dollar deposit plus about 172 dollars a month.

It's possible that the Florida Department of Transportation could cover the costs if they decide the lighting is inadequate.

If not, the Eastpoint Civic association will cover the deposit and the county will pay the monthly cost.

The Franklin County Commission is also asking that streetlights be installed on Bluff Road in Apalachicola which is one of the darkest roads in the county and also the location of a number of accidents.
