For more than 40 years, NOAA has awarded grant funding for projects under the Saltonstall-Kennedy program to individuals, institutions, organizations, and businesses across the country. These funds help address the needs of fishing communities, support economic opportunities, and build and maintain resilient and sustainable fisheries.

Community Steps Up to Continue Yukon River Salmon Research During Pandemic

Fewer Chinook are returning to the Yukon River each year, and those that do are smaller and younger than they have been in the past.  The need to understand what is behind the dwindling returns led to a special partnership between NOAA Fisheries, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and local fishermen from the villages of Emmonak and Alakanuk.

Tucked between the Rappahannock River and the York River, Virginia’s Middle Peninsula is mostly off the beaten path. While the Middle Peninsula is not far to the east of the busy Interstate 95 corridor and Richmond, it remains mostly rural. It includes thousands of acres of ecologically valuable wetlands, forests, pastures, rivers, streams, and bays.
