Oil and Gas Drilling Permits in Floodplain Expire
Apalachicola Riverkeeper has steadfastly opposed oil and gas drilling in the Apalachicola River floodplain. The most recent permits (6) issued to Cholla Petroleum of Dallas, TX have expired. No drilling in the floodplain of Calhoun County was started and it is unlikely a new application process by the company will be initiated. The economy and ecology of the Apalachicola River basin should not be put at risk by the dangers of oil and gas drilling. We will continue to monitor regional oil and gas drilling threats. A big thanks goes out to the residents and supporters, especially in Calhoun County, who actively brought their concerns to state and county officials. More details
Record Set for Volunteer Efforts
Volunteers for Apalachicola Riverkeeper set a group record in 2021: 362 Apalachicola Riverkeeper volunteers logged in more than 2721 hours on behalf of the river and bay. That is a solid commitment that continues to inspire. Volunteer efforts ranged from cleanups to RiverTrek to pro bono legal work. Learn more.
Slough Restoration Project Update
Many of the Slough Restoration Project team members spent a few days in the field together in November. Forester John Tracy and hydrologist Scott Walls shared some notes and photos about the work. The project will restore the connection of three slough systems in the Apalachicola River watershed during times of low flow by removing sediment plugs and reestablishing hydrologic connectivity.
Conservation Lands to Expand
The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation has awarded funding to the State of Florida to acquire and manage approximately 32,000 acres of wetlands and floodplain habitat along 38 miles of the Apalachicola River. Counties include Calhoun, Gulf and Liberty . After the acquisition is finalized, it will provide protection to about one-third of the entire portion of the floodplain. More information
