Franklin County Commissioners this week agreed to move forward on a proposed large-scale change to property adjacent to the St. James Bay Golf Club.
The owners are seeking approval to change the land use on nearly 80 acres from Public Facilities to Mixed Use Residential with the intention of creating affordable workforce housing.
Much of the property will remain undeveloped, about ¾ of the land is wetlands.
The property owners plan to create a mix of single family and multi-family units that would provide some affordable housing for workers in the county.
John Greene, one of the owners at St. James Bay, said that there are nearly 50 employees working at the golf club and the St. James Bay nursing home, and this would allow them to walk to work.
Right now the company loses workers because they have no place to live.
The commission approved the request unanimously, but the approval only transmits the proposal to the state for consideration.
Once the state gives its approval, the county will hold a second public hearing to give final approval to the land use change.
