The Wakulla County Sheriff's office last week completed “Operation Checkmate” which had officials make unannounced visits to the residences of the registered sexual offenders or predators living in the County.

Operation Checkmate was conducted during November and December and included Detectives of the Criminal Investigations Division, supported by the U.S. Marshals Service Sex Offender Investigations Branch.

During the operation, officers made over 119 unannounced visits to the residences of the 99 registered sexual offenders living in Wakulla County.

Detectives also arrested two for sex offender violations and initiated other investigations during the operation which are still pending.

By law, sexual offenders are required to register at the Sheriff’s Office twice per year and sexual predators are required to register quarterly.

Sexual offenders and predators who fail to properly register, or who do not actually live at their stated residence, are subject to arrest.
