The FSU Coastal and Marine lab at Turkey Point has been given approval to begin an oyster shell recycling program at Alligator Harbor

The FSU Coastal and Marine lab at Turkey Point has been given approval to begin an oyster shell recycling program at Alligator Harbor.

Alligator Harbor is one of the primary locations for oyster aquaculture, which has become more popular in recent years.

One unfortunate effect of aquaculture is oyster die -offs, which requires that the oyster farmers dispose of the dead oysters.

Currently there is no location for them to dispose of them easily, so they wind up getting tossed in the woods or other locations.

The Marine Lab now plans to start an oyster shell recycling program which would include placing a few bins on the eastern side of Leonard’s Landing at Alligator Harbor.

The bins would be 4 feet wide and 4 feet long and 2 feet tall.
They would also be bear proof.

The Marine Lab would empty the bins every two days, or more often if needed.

The shells will be taken to the Marine Lab where they will be cleaned and cured and used in oyster reef restoration efforts around the bay.
