A project to install a new fire suppression system at the Fort Coombs Armory in Apalachicola is moving ahead of schedule.
The Franklin County commission recently signed a construction contract with a company called Cook Brothers to remove any lead-based paint from the building and install the new fire suppression system.
The contractors have nearly finished with scraping the loose paint and priming all the white interior surfaces and will soon have environmental testers come in and verify that they have cleaned up all the lead dust.
Within the next few weeks, they should start work on the fire sprinklers.
The project could be complete by the end of the year.
The installation of a new fire suppression system at the Fort Coombs Armory is necessary if the county wants to use the building as a convention center and destination for private events
Without the system, the building is limited to a capacity of only 50 people, though it will easily hold many more than that.
Once the work is complete, The Tourist Development Council will manage the bookings, maintaining the location calendar and handling the promotion of the armory as a destination venue.
