Franklin County commissioners have approved an ordinance banning people from living in campers, RVs, and boats on public property in the unincorporated areas of the county.

The action was taken because of a recent incident where people were found living in a 5th wheel and in a houseboat on blocks on county a right-of-way.

There was no rule specifically banning it.

County attorney Michael Shuler said that activity is a public safety issue, and raises questions about where the people are getting water and electricity.

Under the new rule people will have 5 days to move their vehicle or it will be towed away at their expense.

The new rule does not cover people living in campers on privately owned land, there is already a county ordinance in place for that.
