The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Northwest Florida Health Network to help Franklin County children who are facing a mental health crisis

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Northwest Florida Health Network to help Franklin County children who are facing a mental health crisis.

The NWF Health Network is the private Managing Entity responsible for providing a comprehensive array of behavioral health services in North Florida, including mental health care and substance abuse prevention and treatment.

The new trauma-informed training plan for law enforcement will give deputies a better understanding of the mental health crisis of children and hopefully prevent unnecessary Baker Acts, and potentially negative experiences.

The sheriff’s office already provides Crisis Intervention Team for first responders who handle crisis calls involving people with mental illness including those with substance use disorders

Adding the new trauma-informed training will provide another layer of education concerning mental health in children giving law enforcement the tools to employ appropriate strategies during situations in a positive and impactful way.

This is the first ever program of its kind in Florida, and it will complement a longer-term initiative focused on shifting culture, continuing education, developing policy, and implementing strategies.
