Workers at the Franklin County solid waste department are having to knock down some of the larger piles of debris at the landfill to make sure they are lower than 65 feet.

The County is only permitted to have debris piles up to 65 feet at the landfill and during a recent permit application, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection noticed a few of the piles were taller than the permit allows.

Solid Waste Director Fonda Davis said workers are currently using county equipment to knock the piles down to 62 and a half feet but may have to rent a dozer with a blade if they can’t get the work done quickly enough.

Franklin County is quickly outgrowing the landfill and are looking for more property to expand the facility.

The estimate is the current space should be sufficient about 10 more years as long as we don't have any major storms in that time.

If there are big storms the space could be filled much more quickly – in the year after Hurricane Michael, the landfill handled 4 times more construction and demolition debris that it would normally see, taking up a huge amount of space.
