October ushers in gratitude and some seasonal fun to the coast

Franklin County Residents (and visitors!) Can Step Up to Help Hurricane Ian Victims

In the aftermath of Hurricane Ian that devastated parts of coastal South Florida earlier this week, Franklin County residents and business owners are stepping up to help their southern neighbors. And if you plan to visit this month, you can help too! Franklin County, Sheriff A.J. Smith is spearheading efforts to collect and deliver items for the hurricane relief effort. Following a June 2018 wildfire that destroyed 36 homes in Eastpoint, Smith began a charity fund to raise money for those made homeless by the blaze. Since then, the fund has grown in size and scope, and has responded to natural disasters  as far west as Texas. "We missed Michael, we missed this one. I think we've been really blessed and as a result of this we have to show our goodwill to our neighbors to the south," Smith said. "I hope Franklin County  will come together as we always have in the past." Collection points are popping up across the county and include Jackson's Ace Hardware in Carrabelle,  Taylors Building Supply in Eastpoint and Riverfront Park and Ace Hardware in Apalachicola. According to Smith, the Franklin County Sheriff office plans to send three deputies, along with others from Liberty, Leon and Wakulla counties, to the affected areas once the initial wave of clean-up and search-and-rescue is complete. Local Restaurateur Danny Itzkovitz is collecting donations for food and plans to make the trip south to feed hurricane victims with his food truck Tamara's on the Go. In 2018 following Hurricane Michael, Itzkovitz was instrumental in feeding hundreds of Franklin County residents, first responders and linemen.  If you’re looking for ways to help Floridians, the Florida Disaster Fund deploys resources efficiently and effectively to Floridians directly impacted by Hurricane Ian. If you would like to contribute, please visit FloridaDisasterFund.org or text DISASTER to 20222.
