Aquatic Adventures Summer Camp at the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab in Panacea

Aquatic Adventures Summer Camp!

Now that summer camp has wrapped up, let's see what wonderful, unique opportunities campers got to experience this year!

Campers were able to participate in dock tours where they found mud crabs, sheepshead, barnacles, and even oyster toadfish!

Campers got to play unique educational games, such as lanternfish schooling (shown below), beaks and feet (Shown above), and turtle hurdles!

Campers were able to pull a plankton net at the living dock in order to catch copepods, water striders, and all kinds of larval fishes. Using a digital microscope, they were able to discover just how much life there is in one drop of seawater!

Campers were given the opportunity to visit our aquarium each day, where they could interact with our wide variety of sea creatures in touch tanks. Campers also participated in science experiments regarding specimens and their interactions.

This past week, campers were able to witness the intake of a stranded loggerhead sea turtle.

Our camp had a special visit this week from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. They brought native snakes and turtles to allow our campers to learn about what's in Florida's backyards!

Unfortunately, we have been operating this camp for the past few years at a loss. In order to continue to be able to provide these unique opportunities to children in our community, we are looking for a sponsor. The camp costs approximately $6,000 to run for the summer. If you or your business are interested in becoming a sponsor for Aquatic Adventures Summer Camp, please give us a call at (850) 984-5297, or email us at gspecimen@sprintmail.com.
