Franklin County Commissioners are looking at what they can do to in crease the number of fire hydrants in the county, particularly on St. George Island.

The issue was raised by island resident Jo Ellen Pearman, who pointed out that there have been two major fires on St. George Island over the past month, which destroyed two homes.

Pearman said one of the issues with fighting fires on the island is the lack of fire hydrants nearby.

She pointed out that there are only 57 fire hydrants for the entire center of the island, and there probably hasn’t been a new fire hydrant installed on the island in 20 years, even though new homes are going up every day.

County Commissioner Cheryl Sanders said the problem is not limited to the Island, pointing out that there aren’t any hydrants at all in the area west of Lanark Village, though the City of Carrabelle is currently working to expand its services to that area, which should include fire hydrants.

Commissioner Ricky Jones said in Eastpoint, the responsibility falls to the water and sewer district, and any new project they do has to include fire hydrants.

But no one was quite sure who would be in charge of services on the island.

Commissioners said they need to find out who is actually in charge of adding fire hydrants, whether it’s the water company, the fire department, or the Florida Public Service Commission, and then see what the county can do to help with the process.
