Franklin County Commissioners have approved spending nearly 25 thousand dollars for upgrades to the Camp Gordon Johnston World War 2 Museum

Franklin County Commissioners have approved spending nearly 25 thousand dollars for upgrades to the Camp Gordon Johnston World War 2 Museum.

The money will be provided as a Museum Infrastructure grant through the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.

TDC Director John Solomon said the money will help pay for lighting and display upgrades as well as signs and utility equipment to maintain the museum grounds.

The museum moved into its current location at Carrabelle Beach in 2018 and since then has been working to improve the appearance of its displays so it is more accessible to visitors.

Many of its current display cases are in pretty rough shape with cracked glass, or just unstable in general.

Other cases require enhanced lighting so that the displays are easier to see.

This grant will allow the museum to build 12 new wooden display cases that can be placed against the wall or placed in the center of the museum floor – it will also pay for LED lighting for many of the display cases.

The money will also replace the Museum’s sign on Highway 98, which has lost much of its lettering due to weather, wind and sand.
