The Last Bit of Summer! August typically means heading back to school, settling into familiar routines, and looking ahead to fall. But there’s still plenty of summer left to enjoy in Mexico Beach. The crowds have eased, our restaurants and shops are restocked with local favorites, and there’s still plenty of room on our shoreline for your towel and beach chair. FARMERS & CRAFT MARKET AUGUST 8 & 22 Come spend the morning at the Mexico Beach Farmers & Craft Market at Parker Park, located at 2500 Highway 98. Vendors will include produce, fresh jellies, one-of-a-kind crafts, and much more. Each market is sure to have new vendors, so be sure to come every time. If you’d like to be a vendor, sign up now. This market is put on by the Special Events for Mexico Beach, Inc.

LICENSE-FREE SALTWATER FISHING DAY SEPTEMBER 5 Ready to fish without having to purchase a saltwater fishing license? The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission is offering license-free fishing days for those wanting to test the waters. This is an excellent opportunity for those who don’t yet have a fishing license to experience fishing, to take youth fishing, or for avid anglers to introduce a friend to fishing without having to purchase a State of Florida fishing license. The saltwater waiver applies to any recreational harvest requiring a saltwater fishing license (e.g., crabbing, lobstering, scalloping, etc.) as well as fishing from shore or a boat.

MUSIC IN THE PARK EVERY THURSDAY IN SEPTEMBER The Music in the Park concert series returns this September, bringing live music to Parker Park every Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Enjoy performances by talented local musicians and area favorites, all while soaking in the vibrant evening skies of Mexico Beach. These family-friendly concerts are free and open to the public, so grab your blankets, chairs, and picnic baskets for a relaxing night out.

A FRIENDLY REMINDER: Mexico Beach is a Leave No Trace community, and we appreciate your assistance in helping us keep our beaches clean. Any items left on the beach unattended from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. will be removed and disposed of by the City of Mexico Beach. Items include, but are not limited to, tents and tent frames, beach chairs, coolers, umbrellas, toys, etc. Also, please fill in any holes before you leave and please remain off the sand dunes and out of the sea oats to ensure their continued nourishment. There are boardwalks and walking paths that can be accessed to reach the beach. Your assistance with these requests will keep our beaches beautiful and pristine. CRAB STUFFED RED SNAPPER We publish it with the compliments of the Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association cookbook (MBARA.org). INGREDIENTS 1/3 cup minced onion 3 Tbsp butter ½ lb. crab meat ½ cup fresh breadcrumbs ¼ cup fresh chopped parsley ¼ cup heavy cream 1 tsp. lemon thyme 4 lb. red snapper, dressed for stuffing 1/3 cup dry white wine mixed with 1/3 cup melted butter Salt and pepper DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Sauté onion in butter until golden. Remove from heat and mix in the crab meat, breadcrumbs, parsley, heavy cream, and lemon thyme. Sprinkle the cavity of the fish lightly with salt and pepper. Stuff the fish and skewer edges securely. Place fish in a greased baking pan. Pour wine-butter mixture over fish. Bake uncovered for 30 minutes or until the flesh is opaque, basting frequently with wine sauce. Enjoy!
