SGI lighthouse proves to be a tourist magnet

More than 8000 people have climbed the St. George Island lighthouse since it opened 6 and a half months ago. The lighthouse said the total count has been 8366 visitors, and that was as of Tuesday. In just the last 2 weeks the people from 3 foreign countries and 24 US states have climbed the 92 steps to the top of the structure. Turnout, in fact, has been so good that the lighthouse recently expanded its hours of operations from 21 to 40 hours a week. And hopefully the site will draw even more visitors to the county, the lighthouse now has brochures in all five State of Florida welcome centers so more visitors will know about it. For anyone planning to visit the lighthouse, its open every day but Thursday. The hours are from 10 to 5 expect on Sunday when its noon till 5. If you would like to learn more about the lighthouse and its long history in Franklin County, check out www.stgeorgelight.org.
